Yes, clavichord-making has been a lovely occupation. Like the harpsichord, it's a keyboard, and from the same period, but its strings are, um, hammered, well, "touched" is a better description . . . and you can easily alter the pitch by altering your finger pressure ("bebung," its special ornament). The clavichord is relatively quiet compared to the harpsichord and early piano, so it's not known as a big performance instrument. Rather, it's a contemplative, illuminating keyboard that was very popular from the 16th through the 18th century.
